Honoring Black Excellence: A Look Back & The Path Forward

Dear Supporters, As we close out Black History Month, we reflect on the powerful moments that brought us together moments of storytelling, cultural pride, and a shared commitment to progress.

A Night to Remember – Black History Month at the Expo Center

On February 25, EXPOSE hosted a remarkable gathering at the Expo Center in Downtown Los Angeles, where community leaders, artists, and advocates came together to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the labor movement and beyond.

The evening began with Monalisa Okojie, the founder and CEO of EXPOSE, opening remarks, setting the stage for an inspiring program that explored this year’s theme: "African Americans and Labor." Through engaging discussions, we explored Black history through innovation, contributions, and the lasting legacies that continue to inspire and shape our future.

Voices from across the community shared their insights, including Allen Shay, who spoke on civic engagement and the importance of spreading love. Khloe Thompson, Miss Black CA USA Talented Teen and CEO of Khloe Kares, delivered a heartfelt speech on youth leadership and service, proving that age is never a barrier to making an impact. Later in the evening, Dr. Deborah Hayter shared her expertise on Black contributions to education and social justice, leaving the audience both informed and inspired.

The event was brought to life not only through words but also through rhythm and movement. Pop Diouf, a local drummer, filled the space with electrifying African beats, celebrating the richness of African heritage.

Tashinee Reynolds of Modern Day Wellness led a wellness activity, and David Armenta spoke on the importance of celebrating Black history, reminding us of the importance of black history month.

Other EXPOSE directors, Seye Tesfazgy and Aineakho Ojior, had the opportunity to share what Black history means to them, along with team member Mesi Usiade. As the evening concluded, guests enjoyed a beautifully curated dinner, thanks to Veronica’s Kitchen, Chef Norwood of Darrow’s New Orleans Grill, and Sweetkiwi.

This event was more than a celebration it was a call to action. The conversations we had, the stories we heard, and the connections we built remind us that Black history is not just about the past it is about the future we are shaping together.

Dorothy Height: A Voice That Moved Generations

Black History Month would not be complete without honoring the individuals who fought tirelessly for justice, and Dorothy Height was one of the most influential leaders in this fight.

Born in 1912, Height dedicated her life to civil rights and women’s empowerment, becoming a driving force behind desegregation efforts, voting rights, and policies that advanced economic opportunities for Black communities.

As president of the National Council of Negro Women, she worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., advocating for equality at a time when the voices of Black women were often overlooked.

Height was known not only for her activism but also for her strategic brilliance. She was a master negotiator, pushing for policy changes that led to better education, fair wages, and increased access to healthcare. Even after decades of advocacy, she remained a guiding force, advising U.S. presidents and shaping conversations on race and gender until her passing in 2010.

Her legacy reminds us that change is not given it is demanded. It is built through persistence, courage, and a belief that justice must extend to all, not just some.
